Tick & Tide is made by Daniel Ciornei (“I”, “me”). This page explains what happens to your data when you use the Tick & Tide app on iPhone and Apple Watch.
The short version: I don’t collect any of it.
What I collect
Nothing, unless you write to me. Tick & Tide has no account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your entries never come to me: I can’t see your habits, countdowns, notes, photos or anything else you put in the app.
If you send feedback from the app, your message and its topic, the email address you add (optional) and, only if you leave “Include app and iPhone details” on, the app version, iPhone model, iOS version, language and region, and whether you have Plus are sent through tickandtide.app and emailed to me so I can read it and reply. They aren’t stored on the website, and nothing about your entries is ever included.
Where your data lives
- On your devices. Everything you add is stored on your iPhone (and Apple Watch, for what the Watch shows, including small copies of your habit photos).
- In your own iCloud. If iCloud is on, the app syncs your data through your own iCloud account (Apple’s CloudKit), so it’s on all your devices and survives a new phone. It sits in your iCloud, under Apple’s privacy policy, not with me. You can choose “Keep on this iPhone only” instead.
- Backups and exports you make (optional) are files saved where you choose, such as Files or iCloud Drive.
Permissions the app may ask for
All of these are optional. The app works without them.
- Apple Health: write only. If you allow it, breathing sessions are saved as Mindful Minutes and the feelings you log as State of Mind. Tick & Tide never reads your health data.
- Location. Only if you mark places (for example a place you’d like to avoid, or your gym) and want a nudge when you arrive. Your iPhone checks this on the device; your location is never stored or sent anywhere. Searching for a place uses Apple Maps.
- Contacts. Only if you import birthdays. Names and birthdays of the people you pick are read on your iPhone to create countdowns. Nothing is uploaded.
- Calendar. Only if you import events. Read on your iPhone; your calendar is never changed.
- Photos. You pick a photo for an entry with the system picker; the app only gets that photo. If you save a share card, the app can only add it to Photos; it never sees your library.
- Notifications. Reminders and nudges are scheduled on your iPhone.
- Face ID / Touch ID. Used by iOS to unlock the app; the app never sees your face or fingerprint.
Sharing with people you choose
You can invite someone to follow a habit or to share a countdown. This uses Apple’s iCloud sharing:
- For a habit, the person you invite sees the name you chose (or a private label such as “Private goal 1” if you keep it private), when your current streak started, your best streak, your last pledge, and, only if you turn it on, your tide and milestone news. They never see your notes, reasons, places, money or logs.
- For a countdown, they see its title, date, photo and checklist, and can tick things off.
- Invitations and messages are sent by you, through Messages or the share sheet.
You can stop sharing (or leave a share) at any time in the app. Shared data travels through iCloud between you and the people you invited; I never see it.
Purchases
Tick & Tide Plus is an in-app purchase handled by Apple. I receive no payment details. The app checks on your device whether you own Plus.
Children
Tick & Tide is not directed at children under 13 and collects no data from anyone.
Deleting your data
- One entry: swipe it, or open its ••• menu and tap Delete. Changed your mind? Tap Undo straight away.
- Everything on a device: delete the app.
- Everything in iCloud: on iPhone, Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage / Manage Account Storage → Tick & Tide → Delete Data. (Do this before or after deleting the app.)
- Apple Health samples: Health app → Browse → Mindfulness / State of Mind → Data Sources & Access → Tick & Tide → Delete All Data.
- Sharing: stop sharing from the entry; the other person loses access.
Because I hold no data, there is nothing for me to export or delete for you. But if you have a question, write to me.
This website
This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or third-party scripts. If you use the contact form, your name, email address and message are emailed to me so I can reply, and are not stored on the website. My web host may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for a short time for security.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If the app ever starts collecting data, it will say so clearly in the app and on the App Store before it does.
